Details of European Dance Activities at SCA 50 year!
There are numerous dance classes at SCA 50-year. Below is an extensive list of all the scheduled classes, and the specific information and details about them.  Each class will note Instructor, Genre, Difficulty Level, and Aerobic Level, and other particulars important to that activity.

Learn the core of most English Country Dances (USA) so you can get to the dancing faster!  There are common building blocks in English Country Dancing. Learning them makes getting to the dancing so much easier. Students will learn these common phrases: Up and Double, Siding, Arming, Setting (and Turn), and Hay, and then see how they fit into simple and more complex dances. Teens and older.

Fun and flirty dances here. All are easy. We start with flirting by glancing and playing with your partner *and* your corner in Heart's Ease. Then we will peep with our partner in New Boe Peep. Finally we will hug our partners in Madam Sosilia's Alman.

Two original choreographies by Dafydd Arth. Dafydd's Delight is in the style of an English Country Dance for three couples. Heart's Journey is a bassedance for any number of couples.

Two original choreographies by Dafydd Arth in the style of English Country Dances. Both of these dances are for a set of three couples. Burley Mariners is a brisk, upbeat dance with a hey for couples and a set-progressing figure. Lord Sun and Lady Moon is a flirtatious, somewhat dizzy-making dance that can either be elegant or silly (or both) depending on the music used and the mood of the dancers.



11:00-12:00    Eight is Great

An introduction to Signor Caroso's revised, improved version of Contentezza D'Amore, with step teaching included. This is a graceful, elegant dance with a bouncy sciolta and occasional trabuchetti/destici. All ages welcome.



2:00-4:00    Dances from Shakespeare

Why does Duke Senior say “With measure heap’d in joy, to th’ measures fall” at the end of As You Like It? Why is it a taunt when the French ambassador tells Henry V “there’s nought in France / that can be with a nimble galliard won”? Learn more about the culture of Shakespeare’s time by trying out the dances he and his audiences were familiar with. No previous dance experience necessary, but you will get some exercise!

Two original choreographies by Dafydd Arth in the style of English Country Dances for four couples. Shannon's Shamrock is a cute, lively synthesis of favorite figures from various country dances. Puzzle Box is a playful-but-dizzying dance which folds the shape of the set back and forth many times and eventually concludes with a figure that has been affectionately nicknamed "The Death Spiral".

The cinq pas or cinquepace is just the beginning! Come try some fun and challenging galliard sequences from other dances. We'll play with sequences from dances like Alta Mendozza and maybe even do some Volta. And yes, we will take breaks in between so everyone can catch their breath.

Two easy 15th Century Italian dances. Petit Rose is a dance for couples. Belfiore is for groups of three. Both of these dances include simple patterns and reasonably basic steps, making them highly suitable for dancers seeking a first taste of Italian dances.

Canaries! They're loud! They're stompy! And you can make them up (they're often improvised). Come try some fun and challenging canary sequences from choreographed dances. We'll play with sequences from Il Canario and Alta Vittoria, then challenge you to improvise based on what you've learned.

In 1517 a German visiting Italy sent a letter home about some of the dances he witnessed there. This letter provides us an interesting view of what the dance tradition started by Master Domenico da Piacenza had evolved into in the early 16th century. Come learn the variants of Leoncello, Amoroso and Angelosa found in this letter, as well the dance Vite de Colei only found therein. Familiarity with 15th century Italian dance steps may help, but is not required.

Two moderate 15th Century Italian Dances. Prexonera morphs back and forth between calmly charming and rowdy/playful/teasing, whereas Belreguardo remains reasonably elegant throughout. Steps used for these dances include contrapassi, so discussion about the timing of these steps will be included.

Sure, your local dance master teaches you dances - but that's like saying milk comes from the grocery store. In this class we'll take an introductory look at some of the primary sources from which we draw the dances we do in the SCA. We'll see how some popular dances are described, talk about the different approaches authors took, and learn why dance reconstruction often requires some puzzle solving and experimentation. This class will be a good orientation for dancers looking to broaden their understanding of period dance.

Lovelace Ms Dances are the intermediary between early country dances in the sixteenth century and those highly choreographed dances from the 1651 edition of Playford. They also have a unique flow and charm.

"The Sequence" is a term we've developed to facilitate calling dances, as it is a common set of several key Italian steps. La Castellana practices many important steps, and really drills them in. This class will focus on training our feet to do many steps we need for these dances.
Low impact, fun, silly dances, a great introduction for anyone new to dance. These dances make for a great addition to any Ball, as they take very little time to teach, and emphasize the playfulness of dance as you Mime / Act out different people and things.

A Caroso-style ball is rather like a bardic circle for dancers. Dancers take turns choosing dances and may perform as a single couple or invite the whole company to join them.

The European Dance venue will be in the air conditioned Great Hall, specifically the North Hall partition.  The Great Hall is part of the Main Hall, which is located at the head of The Promenade.
